GarageBand
Week 1:
To start working in GarageBand, you create a new document for your
music, called a "song."
1. Quit all other applications and open GarageBand (from the
guitar icon in the Applications folder). Make a new song/file ("Create a New Music Project" -- DO NOT hit the other buttons, at least not now!). If another song opens
automatically, choose File > New.
2. The "New Project" dialog will appear. Where it says "Save As:
My Song" , write "(your name here) 1st Song". Save
to the DESKTOP (you should see it listed on the left hand side).
You now have a file on the desktop for your project.
When you create a new song, you set the tempo, time signature, and key
of the song. These parameters can all be changed later.
**FOR YOUR WEEK 1 GARAGEBAND TASK, YOU MAY USE THE DEFAULT TEMPO(120)
AND THE DEFAULT TIME SIGNATURE (4/4). ALSO, YOU MAY USE THE
DEFAULT KEY OF C.**
3. Go to Track (at the top of the screen) and choose “New Track”.
**CREATE ONE “REAL INSTRUMENT” TRACK of your choice (there are lots of
choices -- you can change any choice you make later).
4. **OPEN THE LOOP BROWSER** (this is the “eye” button, below
your track window next to the “scissors” button, in the bottom left
corner)
5. Drag a Real Instrument loop (with a blue soundwave icon) to a Real
Instrument track, so the left edge of the loop aligns with the point in
the timeline where you want the loop to start playing. (The
timeline is the horizontal strips with each of your tracks).
6. Drag a Software Instrument loop (with a green note icon) to
the Grand Piano track (which was already there by default), so the left
edge of the loop aligns with the point in the timeline where you want
the loop to start playing.
7. Double-click on the words "Grand Piano" in that default
track. This will bring up a window where you can experiment with
different instrument choices. Try out the sound of the software
instrument loop you dragged to that track with some different
instrument choices. How does that electric piano passage sound as
a trumpet? CREATE MORE SOFTWARE INSTRUMENT AND REAL INSTRUMENT
TRACKS IN THE TIMELINE.
8. YOUR FINAL PRODUCT FOR DAY 1 SHOULD BE A SONG COMPOSED OF FOUR
OR MORE UNIQUE LOOPS ON FOUR OR MORE UNIQUE TRACKS LASTING A MINIMUM OF
30 SECONDS. Check your time by clicking the clock icon in the counter
window.
9. SAVE YOUR WORK!! (File > Save)
10. To turn in your group's work:
Close GarageBand.
Find and select your GarageBand file WITHOUT opening
it.
Go to File (or right-click)> Compress "(whatever your GB
file is called)".
This will make a .zip file of your GarageBand song.
Send the .zip file as an attachment to
andrewpfaff@gmail.com. IF WORKING TOGETHER, MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE THE NAMES OF EVERYONE IN YOUR GROUP, SO I CAN RECORD A GRADE!
Your results will be available from this website
within a few days.
