When I first got serious about learning the bass, I looked around but couldn't find a teacher who could give me a systematic way to apply my musical knowledge to the bass. So, I developed a simple system of my own. The electric bass is related to both the upright bass and the guitar, in different but important ways. However, simply appropriating the technique of either instrument does not make the best use of the electric bass. It was apparent to me that the electric bass has its own unique technical demands, and should be approached as such. The system I lay out in Mode Shapes is the way I taught myself the bass fingerboard. I hope others will find it as useful as I have.
